Bridal Gown Silhouettes

Amsale Fall 2013

Shapes and Sizes

Most ladies have a love/hate relationship with their shape and size.  But, we all reach a certain age where we learn to "make it work" with what we've got, and pick clothing that accentuates our favorite areas, and camouflage areas we would rather not put on display!  When you're off to choose a wedding gown, it's important to remember that no matter what your shape, size, or height is, there is a dress out there for everyone.  If a bride chooses the right silhouette for her shape, she will accentuate the things she likes, while taking the focus off of the areas she's not a big fan of.  To feel beautiful on your big day, you have to pick a dress that suites your personality and body without making you feel like you are wearing an uncomfortable costume.  A bride that is comfortable and confident in her skin will glow beautifully on her wedding day!

 Wedding Dress Silhouettes
  • Ball gown
This silhouette is perfect for the bride that is looking for a grand and dramatic gown.  Many brides want to feel like a "Princess" on their wedding day, and this is the style to get the job done!  This shape is very flattering on tall and curvy ladies, but it has a tendency to overwhelm petite figures.

  • A-line
This is a universally flattering silhouette!  It doesn't matter what your body type is, because there are so many variations of A-line gowns, there will definitely be one out there for you.  This silhouette is perfect for all types of ceremonies, whether your ceremony is casual or formal, there is an A-line gown for you.  This shape is also a happy compromise for the bride that wants a ball gown, but does not want the dress to overwhelm her.

  • Sheath
This silhouette is for the bride that wants a more understated gown.  This style of bridal gown puts the focus on the bride's figure and accessories.  This simple linear shape also has an elongating effect that flatters petite and tall brides.

  • Trumpet or Fit and Flare
This is currently one of the most popular bridal silhouettes!  This silhouette combines sexy, dramatic, and romantic into one shape.  It hugs the brides curves to accentuate existing ones, and creates curves by its fit and flare shape.  This shape is fitting for most body types, but petite brides need to be careful to choose a gown with an understated flare and texture, so it does not overpower their figure.

Bridal gown shopping can become stressful if you let it!  The best way to approach shopping for a wedding dress is with an open mind and a fun attitude.  Try to take the people whose opinion you respect, but limit the number in your shopping party to two or three people.  Too many cooks in the kitchen can lead to confusion and frustration!  Most bridal boutiques stress the importance of allowing enough time for your wedding gown order to be placed, and the gown to be altered.  It is best to order your gown about six months before the wedding.  If, you are purchasing a gown with little time to spare before the wedding, it is a good idea to ask the bridal store what their rush delivery options are, and whether they have any floor samples for sale.  Floor samples are the gowns that brides try-on in the store, they are usually sold for a greatly discounted price, because of the wear-and-tear of being handled.  When purchasing a floor sample gown, it is important to note that these sales are final.  So, make sure to inspect the gown carefully with a seamstress, in order to assess how much alterations and dry cleaning will be required to restore the dress to its original state.
