Let the Planning Begin!!

Timeline for planning your wedding

Time to get organized!

Planning a wedding, working full-time, maintaining a relationship and (having some me time!) can become overwhelming and stressful for most brides.  Therefore, the ideal timeline for planning a wedding is usually around one year.  This doesn't mean that a wedding can't be planned in a shorter period of time, it just means that you will need to be more flexible with your wedding vision and budget.  Weddings can be planned in a month, if need be, but once wedding vendors are aware that you are under a strict deadline, they are less likely to negotiate prices, and the services they are providing may be limited due to availability.

Once, you and your fiance decide on the type of wedding ceremony (religious, non-religious, inter-faith) you would like, and the estimated number of guests you want to invite.  You will find that other items off your to-do-list tie in naturally, the key is not to get overwhelmed, and try to do everything at once!  Create a weekly checklist of wedding tasks to accomplish, and just focus on those items each week.  This way you are getting things done, while having time to focus on other responsibilities and priorities.

Here is a wedding to-do list:

  • Decide on the vision for your wedding (colors, theme, size, formal/informal) and budget
    • Dates that work for the bride/groom and their families
    • Location (local/destination)

  • Reserve ceremony space and officiant
    • Decide which cultural traditions will be observed

  • Reserve your reception space

  • Compile guest list/send out save-the-date cards

  • Decide on whom you would like to include in your wedding party
    • Make sure they are available on that date, and willing to participate in the wedding
      • (Being a bridesmaid can be quiet a financial commitment, some friends may not be able to commit for that reason

  • Start shopping for wedding gown/bridesmaids dresses

  • Reserve entertainment for your reception
    • Reserve ceremony musicians (if necessary)

  • Research and order invitations

  • Research and reserve a photographer/videographer

  • Remind the groom to reserve his tuxedo rental/Purchase his suit
    • The groom should help the groomsmen purchase/rent their suits/tuxedos

  • Reserve wedding day transportation

  • Plan the rehearsal dinner

  • Plan and reserve honeymoon travel plans

  •  Search for an apartment or a home
    • Beginning a marriage in a new place, helps establish the beginning of a new chapter in the couple's lives

  • Purchase wedding favors/accessories
    • Guest book
    • Candles
    • Flower girl baskets
    • Bubbles/rice (for send-off)
    • Wedding programs
    • Runner
    • Bridal party gifts

  • Create a rough timeline for the wedding day, and share with your wedding vendors
    • Confirm all wedding orders with vendors (at least 2 weeks before the wedding)

  • Assign wedding day tasks to bridesmaids/family/wedding coordinator
    • If, family/friends or a wedding coordinator is available to take care of last minute details, then try to utilize them, so you can enjoy your big day!

  • Enjoy your wedding day!!!

  • Send Thank you notes
    • Typically, you have up to 6 months after the wedding to send them out

Hopefully, this wedding list is helpful in getting your wedding planning started and organized.

 Have a lovely day,

M.M.
